Stuart Exteriors provides roof installation services for the full range of roofing systems—shingle, flat roofs, cedar, slate, and metal. There are many well-known brands on the market. We are a certified CertainTeed master shingle installer and generally recommend CertainTeed products, which are considered the best in the market. However, we work with all brands of shingle—including CertainTeed, GAF, Owens Corning, Atlas, and Tamko—and will install whichever brand the customer prefers. 

We perform both commercial and residential projects. We will complete your project with professionalism and the best materials available to fit your budget. Our quotes typically include CertainTeed products with an extended 50-year warranty on materials and labor for roof replacements.

Types of Roofing Materials

Choosing the right roofing material for your home or commercial property is a big decision. Asphalt shingles come in a variety of styles and price points. Flat roofs are known for their durability, long lifespan, and energy efficiency, but require specialized experience and more temperate weather conditions to install. Cedar and slate are beautiful choices but come with some disclaimers. Cedar may significantly increase your homeowner’s insurance due to the fire risk. Asphalt Shingles 

These are the most common type of shingles and are made from a fiberglass base coated with asphalt and ceramic granules. They are affordable and easy to install, making them a popular choice for residential roofs.

  • 3-tab shingles are the most basic and affordable type of asphalt shingle. They are flat and have a simple rectangular shape, with three tabs or notches on the lower edge that create the illusion of separate shingles. They are lightweight and usually have a lifespan of 15-20 years.
  • Architectural shingles, also known as dimensional or laminate shingles, are a step up in quality and cost from 3-tab shingles. They have a more textured and multi-dimensional appearance, with two or more layers of shingle material bonded together to create a thicker and more durable shingle. This gives them a more upscale and high-end look, similar to that of wood or slate shingles. They usually have a lifespan of 25-30 years.
  • Designer shingles are the highest-end and most expensive type of asphalt shingle. They offer an even greater level of durability, as well as more options in terms of shape, texture, and color. They are often designed to mimic the look of other materials such as cedar shake, slate, or tile. Designer shingles can last 30-50 years or more.

Flat Roofs

Flat roofs offer a range of advantages over asphalt shingles, including durability, energy efficiency, easy maintenance, leak resistance, and versatility. Installing flat roofs requires specialized knowledge and experience. Stuart Exteriors technicians are experts in the latest industry standards and best techniques for installing the three popular types of flat roofs used in commercial and residential roofing—TPO, EPDM, and PVC. All three options are designed to be durable, flexible, and weather-resistant. In terms of cost, EPDM roofing tends to be the most affordable of the three options, while TPO and PVC roofing are typically more expensive due to their advanced features and increased durability.

  • TPO (Thermoplastic Olefin) is a single-ply roofing membrane made from a blend of rubber, plastic, and other materials. Relatively new compared to other options, TPO roofs are known for their energy efficiency and reflective properties, making them popular in warm climates.
  • EPDM (Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer) is a synthetic rubber roofing membrane that has been in use for decades. EPDM roofs are known for their flexibility, making them ideal for buildings that may expand or contract over time.
  • PVC (Polyvinyl Chloride) is a thermoplastic roofing membrane made from a blend of plastic and other materials. Wood Shingles

Metal Shingles

These shingles are made from metal, such as aluminum or steel, and can mimic the look of other types of shingles. They are durable and long-lasting but are more expensive than asphalt shingles.

Slate Shingles

These shingles are made from natural slate and are very durable and long-lasting. They are also quite expensive, and installation can be complicated due to the weight of the slate.

Synthetic Slate

Synthetic slate is designed to mimic the look and texture of natural slate while being more lightweight and flexible than traditional slate roofs, which can be very heavy and prone to cracking and breaking over time. Synthetic slate is made from a variety of materials, including recycled rubber, plastic, and other synthetic materials, which are combined to create a durable, long-lasting roofing product.
